Snapshots of a Mission Trip

Hot Kansas/Missouri days;

weeds growing in cracked sidewalks;

boarded or barred windows;

man using his brown paper bag for a pillow;

sounds and smells of the city;

four very white white girls in a sea of dark faces;

dark hands reaching out to touch white ones;

children pushing to be nearest;

hands and hearts reaching out

to push children in swings and touch lives;

children's voices shouting out songs of praise;

seeing outside through holes in church walls;

Grace Church--an island of hope in a sea of poverty;

Salina hearts changed forever.

    Dear Sunrise Church,

          Thank you all for helping support our mission team on our trip to inner-city Kansas City.  This experience was meaningful for me, and I believe we made an impact on the children and needy people in this area.  We worked at three different places throughout the week:  A Grace United Church summer program for inner-city low income children, NEWHouse, a domestic violence shelter where we helped with daycare, and Harvesters, a Kansas City food bank.  All three of these places presented new ways for us to "giveback" to those in need and realize how much we are truly blessed.  Thanks for your donations and support!

          The Kansas City Mission Trip was exciting and worth while.  I was surprised how attached the kids at Grace United Church and the women's shelter were.  They always wanted to sit in your lap or hold your hand.  At the food bank we packaged over 2,000 servings of pasta.  As I expected this was fun.

          I enjoyed the Kansas City Mission trip very much.  It was interesting to be the minority, as the children were all black and Hispanic except for one.  The children also seemed happy to see us and meet us.  To see how those children live was also different for us.  They were very needy for attention and love.  The mission trip had a good impact on me and I hope it did for the children also.

          The Kansas City Mission Trip was a great experience!  We learned a lot about people who had very different lifestyles then what we're familiar with.  Each day whether it was the women's shelter or Grace United Church we worked with kids.  The kids were just happy to get the attention we gave them.  It was also fun to know we helped feed over 2,000 people.  Although there was only six of us hopefully we made at least a small difference in someone's life.
